World’s largest 60 GW Hydrogen City Project in Texas to get its own 5GW electrolyser factory

Green Hydrogen International announced the Hydrogen City project in March, which will be powered by 60 GW of wind turbines and solar panels in Duval County in south Texas, producing more than 2.5 million tonnes of renewable H2 annually upon completion. The project is centered around a hydrogen storage facility in the Piedras Pintas Salt Dome located in Duval County. Pipelines will deliver the green hydrogen to Port of Corpus Christi and Port of Brownsville where it will be turned into green ammonia, sustainable aviation fuel and other products, or delivered by pipeline directly to hydrogen power plants and other users around the state. The first 2GW phase of Hydrogen City is due to begin operations in 2026.
A Canadian hydrogen specialist organisation-Hydrogen Optimized, intends to construct a 5GW-a-year electrolyser factory in the US state of Texas that will be purpose-built to supply the nearby 60GW Hydrogen City project. The company plans to plans to manufacture its yet-to-be-commercialised ‘high-current’ RuggedCell electrolyser at a yet-to-be-determined site in the Lone Star state. It has not disclosed many details about its electrolyser, other than to say it can ramp up from 0% to 100% power load very quickly so is therefore suited to variable renewable energy. This is a similar dynamic response to proton-exchange membrane (PEM) technology, but unlike PEM, the RuggedCell machine does not require expensive iridium. Green Hydrogen International (GHI), says it intends to purchase the facility’s entire output for the first ten years of operation.
Earlier, with a large number of announced projects, Europe and Japan were leading the hydrogen economy, however, this gigawatt scale hydrogen project combined with $8 billion dollar hydrogen hubs announced in US Bipartisan Infrastructre Bill, USA is poised to become a leader in hydrogen market. Moreover, with a large scale hydrogen production, not only it can use it in several hard to abate sectors and reduce its carbon footprint but also become a net exporter of hydrogen to partner countries like Japan and South Korea.
