The Department of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) in the UK has given planning permission to the country’s biggest ever battery storage project, planned by InterGen. The 320 MW/640MWh lithium-ion project would be located at DP World London Gateway, a new port and logistics centre on the Thames Estuary in Essex, and will also have the potential for further expansion, as far as 1.3GWh. Fluence is providing the technology for the site, having worked in partnership with InterGen for the past two years following a competitive tender process. The project will be dwarfing the UK’s biggest active project so far, the 50MW / 75MWh Thurcroft battery storage site in South Yorkshire, which is several times smaller than the planned project. PTR believes that this project may potentially open doors to other large projects of this size in the country, especially with the relaxation in BEIS regulation of larger projects.
