Siemens Energy to supply Italian transmission system operator (TSO) Terna with two STATCOMs

by May 12, 2021

Siemens has been able to land its first STATCOM order from Italy. Like other European countries, Italy has also ambitious plans to integrate a large share of renewables in its energy mix. Deployment of renewables at such a large scale poses challenges to grid such as voltage drops and blackouts. Italy is clearly learning from Germany’s TSOs and making all preemptive efforts to ensure grid stability. To achieve that, Italy has ordered two STATCOMs from Siemens Energy both having capacity of 125 MVAr operational at 400 kV. Siemens will be providing two containerized solutions to Terna and this will be first time that STATCOMs for such a large voltage level are going to be containerized. Intermittent nature of renewables also causes issues pertaining to short circuit power and inertia. To deal with these, Terna also ordered two synchronous condensers from Siemens Energy which will be commissioned by end of 2021. It won’t be wrong to say that Terna is acquiring comprehensive “FACTS Solution for Renewable Integration”. The STATCOMs will be commissioned in 2022. This makes Siemens Energy a pioneer in supply of utility FACTS in Italian market as in past only FACTS demand in Italy was only from steel sector. From steel sector, LS Power and RXHK have recently bagged a STATCOM orders in Italy. In terms of installed base, Hitachi ABB Power Grids has major market share as they have supplied close to ten SVCs to steel sector in last 4 decades.
