India has created a new central power transmission utility after spinning off the electricity transmission system planning business from the state-run Power Grid Corp of India (PGCIL). The planning for this milestone started back in June 2019 when the Indian government directed PGCIL to set up Central Transmission Utility as a 100 % subsidiary with separate accounting and board structure that would identify and plan transmission network in the country. Moreover, this move will benefit PGCIL in focusing on implementing the distribution reforms and the Renewable Energy Management Centers (REMC) along with other businesses such as telecom.
