DEWA has awarded a five-year framework contract to Hitachi ABB Power Grids for the supply, installation, testing and commissioning of 15 new substations and the upgradation of 18 existing substations across Dubai. Additionally, Hitachi ABB Power Grids will supply DEWA with the latest substation automation, control and protection monitoring systems (SCMS), encompassed in an advanced cybersecurity solution. Under the framework agreement, Hitachi ABB Power Grids will supply MicroSCADA, a power automation solution along with its Relion family of intelligent electronic devices (IED) for the protection, control, measurement and supervision of power systems. The project is an important step in introducing next-generation power systems and a smarter and stronger grid in the Middle East.

DEWA has inaugurated 20 new substations in 2020. These include a 400 kV substation in Dubai South with a capacity of 2,020 MVA and nineteen 132 kV substations in several areas across Dubai with a capacity of 2,700 MVA.

This substantial investment in grid infrastructure is primarily because, under the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050, DEWA plans to install 42 GW of clean and renewable energy. To achieve the target of 75% clean energy by 2050, DEWA has announced to invest USD 23 billion in the energy sector.
