Hitachi ABB Power Grids has successfully energized fixed series capacitor project in transmission network of Minnesota Power

by May 13, 2021

Minnesota Power is first utility in the state of Minnesota to deliver 50% renewable energy to its consumers. In order to meet their goal of supplying 100% renewable energy by 2050, Minnesota Power is bringing hydropower from Manitoba, Canada to its customers in Northeastern Minnesota. To realize this, deployment of a major 500 kilovolt (kV) transmission line stretching between Winnipeg, Manitoba and Grand Rapids, Minnesota has been completed. To ensure a stable transfer of energy and avoid any congestion issues in future, Hitachi ABB Power Grids has supplied one of the world’s largest fixed series capacitors (FSC) system for Great Northern Transmission Line project which will enhance transfer capability of the line. Due to presence of other strong players in the region like GE and MEPPI, this is first series compensation project during span of last five years by Hitachi ABB Power Grids. However, this very large deployment has certainly added to Hitachi ABB Power Grids advantage not only in terms of their market share but also an indication of their capability to carry out such large FSC systems deployments. An increase in demand of FSC and other FACTS devices is expected in USA as new US government has set ambitious renewable targets.
