Form Energy, the Bill Gates-backed startup, and Minnesota utility Great River Energy are joining forces to deploy a 1 MW / 150 MWh pilot project in Minnesota. The project harnesses long-duration storage that Form Energy says can significantly outlast its lithium-ion battery utility-scale counterparts currently deployed. This system will be the first commercial deployment of Form Energy’s proprietary long-duration energy storage system, identified for the first time as an “aqueous air” battery system. If successful, this duration would allow for a fundamentally new reliability function to be provided to the grid from storage, historically only available from thermal generation resources, and can be considered an unprecedented achievement for the storage industry.
