ABB and Fluor have formed a global strategic partnership for the execution of large turnkey engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) projects for electrical substations.

Impression: This indicates a significant shift in modus operandi for ABB by not taking on EPC portions of the work as aggressively as it has done in the past and is a more direct indication than was implied by the HV cable business sale last month. The business model may be evolving to allow for arms-length operation between the OEM and EPC divisions of ABB which should certainly be a boon for the OEM division, especially in the North American market. From Fluor’s perspective, a huge opportunity outside of North America is presented where the company had less exposure in power grid infrastructure.
