Chief Minister Punjab issued instructions for expediting electric bus operations in Lahore. These electric buses would run on six routes in the city, covering 106km. “The Lahore Transport Company will be transformed into Punjab Transport Company with transport inspectors, sub-inspectors and sergeants to be recruited for the organization,” he added. The company will be responsible for ticketing, security and other matters, while the private operators will run the buses and will be paid on a per kilometre basis. The project will receive technical support from the deferral ministry of science and technology, while a $20 million loan will be taken from the World Bank. Lahore recently topped the charts for the worst air quality in the world on the IQAir charts. Increasing environmental concerns are the reason behind electrification in public transportation.
