Australia has been rapidly shifting its generation mix from traditional energy sources to renewable energy. This new generation mix has caused a shortfall in system strength and inertia which was provided by conventional synchronous generators. ElectraNet carried out an evaluation to identify cheaper alternatives to address this issue and synchronous condensers turned out to be an efficient solution. In Lieu of that, ElectraNet has recently installed two synchronous condensers at the Davenport substation which are expected to go online before end of the year. The project consists of installation of two more systems at Robertstown substation which will be energized by April 2021. These synchronous condensers are being supplied by GE. Link to the news:
