AES Commissions 100 MW/400 MWh Alamitos Battery Energy Storage System in California.

by Jan 29, 2021

AES Corporation has commenced operations of the Alamitos battery energy storage system (BESS), one of the world’s largest battery storage systems in operation today, providing up to 100 MW/400MWh of capacity to Southern California Edison (SCE) customers during peak demand, located at AES Alamitos Energy Center. The BESS technology at the Alamitos facility includes Advancion 5 batteries provided by Fluence. Its world’s first stand-alone energy storage project for local capacity and will help State of California meet its sustainability goal of 100 percent carbon-free energy by 2045. It’s also the first standalone battery energy storage system specifically procured to replace a natural gas peaker plant in the U.S. with a long power purchase agreement of 20 years. With this project AES now has an operational portfolio of 2.5 GW of renewable projects with nearly half located in California and a contracted 2.6 GW pipeline nationwide with almost 20 percent of those projects in California.
